  • Who? What? Why? Where?: The Guardian Book of Questions

    The Guardian, Mike Herd

eBook (Guardian Books, Jan. 8, 2012)
Begin asking a question of Google, and some interesting insights into the inner-conflicts of the collective human mind emerge. Type “how …” and two of the most popular choices are “how to make pancakes” and “how to lose weight fast”. But there is also a heartening level of wonder at the world around us: type “why …” and the top 10 list is bookended with “why is the sky blue?” and “why are manhole covers round?”.We did some of our own research into the most frequently asked questions on the Guardian site and what you find in this book is our attempts to answer some of the most interesting, taxing and bizarre. Everything from 'What is quantative easing?' to 'What does human flesh taste like?'. And here it is – eclectic, discursive, and not always right. That, in the digital age, seems a motto to be proud of. We don’t have all the answers, but we will never stop asking questions, and we hope you don’t either.
  • The Little Donkey

    G. William Ryan, Joanne Purdy

Paperback (Guardian Books, March 19, 2014)
A Palm Sunday/Easter Story for All Ages The uniqueness of this book is that the Lord, through a message given to a church on a Palm Sunday, inspired it. The message is for all ages, but especially for the young. It is meant to provide a sense of being special to the Lord no matter the child's age or situation. It brings the child and parent into a bond, while telling the story of a Saviour who loves both of them. It helps take away the fear of death with the knowledge that Jesus has provided a Heaven. It shows that Jesus rewards us no matter how small the task may seem and that He never forgets to reward. The story is biblically correct in that Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem on that day. If we are to lift up any animal on Palm Sunday it should be not a rabbit but a donkey, which is a sign of meekness and peace. Born in a small community in southern Ohio, George William Ryan graduated with a degree in chemistry and biology. He worked in the plastics field for such companies as B.F. Goodrich Co., Chrysler Corporation and Occidental Petroleum before starting a consulting business in 1974. He is presently the owner of the Ryan Development Corporation, serves on several boards and is listed as an expert executive by the International Executive Service Core as well as in the Who's Who Registry of the Society of Plastics Engineers. His most important work is as a servant of God and the current president of the Missionary Evangelical Church of Christ.

Everyone knew what ghosts looked like, didn’t they? But, then Simon had always imagined ghosts as transparent ‘things’ floating above the ground. They dressed in medieval clothes and were knights or soldiers or things like that. Sometimes they appeared as spooky women dressed in grey or black. Of course, he had never actually seen one.The man in the beige suit folded his arms, his face quite serious. “I know it sounds crazy, and I don’t expect you to believe me, but the man who murdered Mrs Durand-Deacon in 1949 was known as the Acid Bath Murder. Although he was hanged for the murder back then, I think he has come back to murder again!”
